Called United Provinces when the British ruled India, UttarPradesh is one of the larger states on India. A large part of the state lies comprise the fertile Gangetic plains and therefore supports a huge population. The state borders Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttranchal on north, Rajasthan on west, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh in south and Bihar on east. It also shares international border with Nepal on north.

A culturally rich state, Uttar Pradesh was always politically important. Many ancient and medieval empires started from here and spread northwards. Heritage monuments like the Taj, Sarnath, and Bara Imambara stand testimony to the intermixing of cultures. The arts and crafts from the state are known worldwide. Brass from Moradabad, Silk sarees from Varanasi, Carpets from Mirzapur, Chikan work drom Lucknow…the list goes on.

Dance and music from the state has been instrumental in taking the Indian culture to higher realms of creativity. Kathak is a classical dance form with graceful movements and is evident of the mix of cultures. Hindustani classical music also reached its zenith in the state. Great maestros of the music are believed to cause rains with their emotional rendering of the ragas.

Cuisine from the state is also popular. Vegetarian dishes are so many that its difficult to choose one at a buffet. Mughlai cuisine for non vegetarian preparations are also world famous.

The state has some good tiger reserve like the Dudhwa national park. Lakhimpur Kheri is a must see location - home to the Tiger Reserve - and another sanctuary, Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, the most concentrated sanctuary in India, with a large population of tigers, as well as leopards, situated in Bahraich and bordering Nepal is also worth a visit
